Walls have been decorated with fabric hangings for centuries-the very large ones had the advan- tage of providing warmth and decoration at the same time. The famous Bayeux tapestry is not, in fact, a tapestry at all, but a stitched wall- hanging, made to record an historical event. Although the colours have faded slightly, con- sidering its enormous length it is in a remarkable state of preservation-a fact which should give encouragement to anyone embarking on a less ambitious wall-hanging today. At the other end of the scale were the small samplers, sometimes using a great variety of stitches, recording family events, biblical quot- ations, or the alphabet, in minute cross-stitches. These samplers were often put under glass, in a frame, so some of them have survived very well. The most noticeable feature of nearly all these wall-hangings is the consistency of the materials and the technique. Today we are fortunate in having a huge range of threads and fabrics at our disposal, giving enormous scope for creativity and originality.
