Interior design in the 20th century

Tate, Allen - Nama Orang; Smith, C. Ray - Nama Orang;

The history section of this textbook, Part 3, was made possible by a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, under the direction of Carter H. Manny, Jr. To him and to his trustees, I am deeply grateful for having supported an extended final revision of the text and for their expression of confi- dence in the history. The idea for a modern interior design textbook was initiated by Harper & Row, and I am indebted to editors Earl Shepherd and Fred Henry, who foresaw the need for coverage of twentieth-century interior design as a companion to avail- able interior design textbooks. It was Allen Tate, then chairman of the Department of Environmental Design at the Parsons School of Design in New York City, who devised the three-part outline of the book. An interior design educator for more than twenty years, he understood the necessity of twentieth-century interior design history as part of his concept outline for the textbook of which we are co-authors. And it is to him that I gratefully credit the idea of such a history. To many people, that assignment would suggest merely a history of the modern movement as it affected interior design. My view of the assignment was more inclusive.
