About three years ago, a number of us at Apple working in the area of media began to explore a vision that in retro- spect has had a profound impact on personal computing. Instead of thinking about media as the restricted domain of a few highly trained professionals, we began to examine how ordinary users might incorporate temporal data types (digital movies and sounds) into the kind of documents they were used to creating. We built simulations showing how easy (and fun) it should be to work with movies on the Macintosh, e.g., to be able to drag a movie out of the Scrapbook, drop it into a MacWrite document or Power- point presentation, and manipulate it. We called these documents dynamic documents because they contained time-varying data types.
