The process of design requires a continuous flow of information among the architect, the building owner, the contractor, the people who will ultimately use the building, and any number of design specialists, analysts, and consultants. The process involves the gen- eration and selection of alternatives that satisfy owner and user needs. The criteria used to generate and evaluate these alternatives are usually defined-implicitly or explicitly-by the project owner. At times these criteria are established by regulation, as by life-safety codes or accessibility requirements, and at other times the designer defines the criteria in isolation from any owner guidelines or direc- tion. Only rarely are the people who use environments consulted during the design process, especially if the project involves a large and complex building program.
