The publication of the seventh edition of this book follows the introduction of the sixth edition of the Standard Method of Measurement and the Practice Manual which accompanies it. We have over the years tried to make this book a practical interpretation of the rules for taking off the main elements of a simple building, combined with our suggestions of what we consider good practice, in fact a practice manual of taking off. The arrangement of this book follows closely that of previous editions. Metrication has now settled down and we feel is sufficiently familiar to allow us to drop the m and mm from the drawings, which are now figured in millimetres in line with current drawing office practice. The virtual disappearance of the traditional worker-up has meant that less emphasis has been put on the abstract than before, although the skill of the experienced abstractor is still sometimes called for, even in these days of slip sorting and computers. It may well be that chapters 22 and 23 appear for the last time in their present form.
