Contact: a textbook in applied communications 2nd edition

The first edition of Contact had its genesis when Professor Coramae Thomas and I were assigned to teach a course in communications skills for vocational-technical students and could find no suitable text. One of the impressive contributions of the book is that its presence prompted numerous schools to develop courses specifically designed to serve the vocational-technical students, courses that had been needed for some time but for which no adequate text existed. Since the publication of Contact four years ago, changes have taken place in all aspects of education, but particularly in the growing voca- tional-technical specializations. This second edition attempts to serve the needs of that changing curriculum. It includes more discussion of the theory and purpose of communication and presents listening skills as a major part of the communicative process. Assignments give more room for oral performances, and the various types of writing assignments have been arranged into a more logical sequence. Emphasis has been placed. upon making the communication tasks less formal while retaining their accurate, functional nature. Thus the formal chapter on outlining gave way to a brief but pointed chapter on organizing, and the chapter on logic now focuses more on how man arrives at a decision than on the syllogistic process per se. Finally, a brief "English Handbook" has been added to this edition. While not designed to answer every question a student might have, it does contain helpful guides that will aid him in avoiding some common errors.
